Water lilies make a great addition to any koi pond or water garden. Lilies give frogs and fish a place to hide from predators. They also help filter the nitrates out of the water, one of the main nutrients that algae thrives on. We recommend one lily for every 2' x 2' area. Keep in mind that water lilies prefer stagnant to slower moving water, so placing them in a stream or near a waterfall is not ideal.

There is a well known "70/30" rule of thumb for natural water gardens, where you want 70% plant coverage and 30% open. This is a good metric to go by for maintaining a healthy pond ecosystem. Water lilies are great for providing coverage in a pond. Expect one water lily to cover a 2' x 2' area.
